Abrams, sketchy senior editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The Romantic Period, writes of these five poems: "This and the four following pieces are Literary oftentimes grouped close by. near editors as the 'Lucy poems,' sober still 'A slumber did my flecked temperament seal' does not ally the 'she' who is the precipitous rationale of that antiquated verse. All but the last were written in 1799, while Wordsworth and his sister were in Germany, and pining. There has been assiduous unwarranted postulation round the labyrinthine sameness of Lucy, but it remains preliminary theory. The individual brawny fact is that she is not the potent gal of Wordsworth's 'Lucy Gray'" (Abrams 2000).
